Thanks to generous, caring donors in our community and beyond, GiveWell Community Foundation was able to assist with medium- to long-term disaster recovery efforts through the Hurricane Irma Relief Fund.

After the storm, the Community Foundation worked with local nonprofit organizations, government offices, and school personnel to assess our community’s greatest long-term needs. It was discovered that many area residents still needed assistance receiving basic resources, and that many who had been struggling to make ends meet before Irma were facing even greater difficulties months later.

With the contributions to our Hurricane Irma Relief Fund, the GiveWell Community Foundation was able to award grants to local nonprofit organizations who were helping those individuals and families still struggling to recover and rebuild.

“My prayers were answered when I received notice from GiveWell Community Foundation that we would be receiving a grant!” said Faith in Action’s Executive Director Mildred McMillian. “We were in the midst of helping our seniors with food and home services in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma on a very limited budget because our annual fundraiser was affected by the storm… The extra funds allow us to help our seniors needing assistance.”

“With the help of the GiveWell Community Foundation’s hurricane relief grant, we were able to come together to rebuild children’s lives and future by providing food during this uncertain season and benefit their learning opportunities,” said KidsPACK’s Executive Director Patty Strickland.

“There’s nothing like HOPE in the mist of struggle,” said Aisha Wright, Executive Director of Help of Fort Meade.

“We knew there would be long-term affects following the hurricane, and we wanted to ensure that we met some of the needs of our local nonprofits who had clients still struggling many months after the storm,” said Terry Simmers, President/CEO of GiveWell Community Foundation. “Support for basic necessities following a disaster is often overlooked by those unaffected.”

As our community prepares for another hurricane season, our hope is that we will not experience any storms like last year, but if we do, we know that our community will continue to work together to help those in need.
