Why join the Legacy Society?
When you become a GiveWell Community Foundation Legacy Society member, you’ll join others who have made the commitment to ensure that their legacy of philanthropy continues for years to come.
Make an impact. By including GiveWell Community Foundation in your estate plan, you will create a lasting impact for your community and the causes that matter to you. As your trusted partner, the Community Foundation will steward your gift so you can be confident that it reflects your wishes.
Share your story. Since donor intent is one of our core principles, we encourage you to let us know why you are passionate about the causes you care about, so we can share your story with those who will benefit from your future gift.
Choose how you want to give. Whether you choose to create a fund now to be used for your future gift, or leave an outright gift, the Community Foundation will ensure that your intentions are met.
Enjoy member benefits. You will be invited to events and educational opportunities with others who have made our community’s future a priority. You will also have access to donor services offered by the Community Foundation.
Receive recognition. If you choose, your generosity of community stewardship will be recognized; otherwise, we respect the wishes of those who prefer to remain anonymous.
Legacy Stories
Paul and Jean Cate, longtime community advocates, wanted to ensure their support of the community would continue past their lifetimes.
The couple established the Paul and Jean Cate Charitable Endowment Fund within the Community Foundation to provide annual financial support to nine local nonprofit organizations that they were passionate about. Since 2006, more than $1.9 million has been given, making a lasting impact on these organizations and those they serve.

How do I join the Legacy Society?
Once you have included GiveWell Community Foundation in your estate plan, you simply complete the membership form specifying your intent to leave a planned gift. The amount or type of gift is not required. You may choose to remain anonymous, if desired.
What are the types of planned gifts?
Planned gifts can include a outright gift, a bequest in your will, a life insurance policy, or retirement account. For more complex estate planning, please consult the advice of your professional advisor.
Do I need to establish a fund to become a member of the Legacy Society?
While it’s not a requirement to establish a fund, you may choose to establish a fund during your lifetime so that it will help us to better understand your goals, ensuring that we meet your intentions to honor your wishes to support the organizations and causes that are meaningful to you.
How do I plan an estate gift?
GiveWell Community Foundation provides complimentary and confidential philanthropic services designed to assist you in creating a legacy plan that meets your charitable goals. If you already have a relationship with a professional advisor, we can work with you both to fully develop a plan that blends your tax planning with your philanthropic objectives.
