A grant from the Yardley, England, Trimmer, and Orlich Charities Fund at the Central Florida Foundation helped fund care for sick and injured residents in Winter Haven unable to obtain medical care.

GiveWell Community Foundation (GWCF) has received a grant from the Yardley, England, Trimmer, and Orlich Charities Fund at the Central Florida Foundation to care for sick and injured residents in the Winter Haven area who are unable to financially obtain medical care. To achieve this, GWCF awarded the grant funding to two nonprofit clinics serving the greater Winter Haven community: Central Florida Health Care and Angels Care Center of Eloise.

Central Florida Health Care (CFHC) is a medical clinic providing quality, accessible primary healthcare to the insured, uninsured, under-insured, and migrants of Polk County. CFHC’s “Healthy Teeth Means Healthy Kids” program received grant funding, allowing them to collaborate with the Boys & Girls Club of Polk County to bring basic dental service and education directly to the children at the Citrus Center Boys & Girls Club / George Jenkins Memorial Unit in Winter Haven on an early release school day. The dental team took special care to make the program fun and interactive. They even had a visit from the Tooth Fairy! With $2,552.96 in grant funding, Central Florida Health Care provided 28 children with dental education, screenings, oral exams, and fluoride treatments, an over $10,000 value, right in the comfort of their local community center. One of those children, an eight-year-old with a tooth ache he hoped would eventually “just go away,” was found to have a dental abscess, a serious health condition that can turn fatal for children if not treated promptly. CFHS and the Boys & Girls Club followed-up with the boy and his guardians to ensure he received proper treatment – at no cost to them.

Angels Care Center of Eloise, Inc. is a faith-based primary care clinic that provides free health care to residents in the Eloise and Winter Haven area who have no medical health insurance. Volunteer physicians provide free general health care at the facility, and the clinic negotiates with local medical centers to provide specialized services at reduced rates. Angels Care Center of Eloise’s “Dental, Orthopedic, Vision for Everyone (D.O.V.E.)” program received $7,658.88 in grant funding, allowing 13 patients to receive dental and vision services valued at more than $24,000. Jenci, a 53-year-old single mom with an adult son with special needs, was one of those 13 patients. Jenci has a steady job, but she does not receive health or dental insurance. Her teeth were a source of constant pain and self-consciousness, especially at her customer service job. However, much of what she earns goes toward taking care of her son and providing a place for them to live, so dental surgery had not been an option for her. At Angel’s Care Center of Eloise, Jenci received extensive dental treatment that, if left untreated, could have become life-threatening. She was also received upper dentures at no cost to her.

Thank you to the Yardley, England, Trimmer and Orlich Charities Fund and Central Florida Foundation for allowing GWCF the opportunity to administer this grant. Compassion and collaboration turned a grant of $10,211.84 into more than $34,000 worth of critical medical care for members of our community who needed it most.
