BARTOW – On February 8 and 9, students from Lawton Chiles Middle School had the opportunity to travel to the county seat in Bartow for an exploration of the political process in Polk County. The “County Government Discovery Day” was made possible by a partnership with the Polk County History Center and the Polk County Board of County Commissioners and an Impact Polk 2017 grant from the Grant Committee Unrestricted Fund within the GiveWell Community Foundation.
Students visited the Polk County History Center, Courthouse for Florida’s Tenth Judicial Circuit, and administrative building for the Polk County Board of County Commissioners, and each location featured activities designed to enhance the curriculum being covered in their classrooms. The program also provided a behind the scenes look at how the political process serves citizens across Polk County.
